IT may have escaped the attention of many, but today is England's national day.
April 23 is St George's Day but - despite a few pubs and locations in Croydon getting into the patriotic spirit - it generally fails to stir the emotions and attract the sort of celebrations seen in Ireland (and elsewhere) for St Patrick's Day.
PATRIOTIC: Revellers at the Smugglers' Inn, Coulsdon, this weekend
One Croydon musician with a love of all things English has backed the call to make St George’s Day a national holiday.
Roger Fullilove is due to play his popular brand of Cockney singalong tunes at The Earl of Eldon, in South Croydon, tonight.
And having written a quintessentially English book entitled Pie ‘n Mash ‘n Liquor, a collection of songs, anecdotes and memories about real London life, the Crystal Palace-based performer is no doubt we should do more to celebrate our patron saint’s day.
He said: “It is outrageous that we celebrate St Patrick’s Day but don’t make a fuss about our own day.
“St George’s Day just isn’t marketed properly. Someone needs to get hold of it and do something with it; Guinness put millions of pounds into St Patrick’s Day.”
On whether April 23 should be a national holiday, Mr Fullilove added: “Of course it should be. I’m all for another day off.”
